The haftara reading for the second day of Yom Teruah (Day of the Blast), has a remarkable section of concern to all the current returnee children of Joseph who were prophesied to return to the Torah and the Covenant between Israel and the G-d of Jacob in the Latter Days, (Ezekiel 37:15:22).  It is in the midst of a treasure trove of other verses that speak of the restoration of “the maiden of Israel,” and that there is “a remnant” returning from the coasts and isles of the Earth.  They are described as returning to the Covenant of the G-d of Israel with weeping and are lead homeward along "the straight paths of the Torah," (Jer. 50:4-5).  Among them are the unforgettable prophetic word pictures of Rachel weeping for her children “who were not,” the vanished  descendants of Yosef, of Ephraim. This beloved firstborn is prophesied to return to his forsaken G-d and to the cities of the Land, repopulate it alongside with Yehudah, (Jer. 31:9, 33:20-28).  One of these references is the most exquisite chapter of the restoration of repentant Israel from her centuries-long exile to the Covenantal land of her heritage:

“Thus says the L-rd:  The people who survive the sword shall find grace in the wilderness, when Israel goes to seek rest.  From afar the L-rd appeared, saying: ‘With everlasting love I love you, hence I draw you to me with affection.  Again will I build you and you shall be restored, maiden of Israel!  Again shall you array yourself in your timbrels and join the merry dancers.  Again shall you plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria; the planters will plant and enjoy the fruit.  The day will come when the watchmen on Mount Ephraim shall call: ‘Let us rise and go up to Zion, to the L-rd our G-d.” Jer.  31:1-6, Birnbaum Machzor translation

Some call for Ephraimites to return to the Land now.  This eventuality will come about, sooner or later at the appointed time.  At the present there are many internal obstacles within and among the emerging fledgling bands of Ephraim.  There are also many barriers within the political structure of the State of Israel to make this resettlement of returnees from Ephraim not viable.  Most importantly, the “union” of the two separated houses of Israel  cannot be realized now, not only because the necessary numbers are not there, but chiefly because “the new heart” and “new spirit” empowering it has not been given to them yet from on High, (Ez. 36:26-28).

However,  there is a task for some pioneering few souls who are called to be forward rangers and  trailblazers.  They are to go ahead into the Land like Yehoshua and Calev of old did and are to  bring back a good report for the many to follow.

We are to note that the only two from among the twelve brought back a good report to those waiting to enter the Land, were Joshua and Calev, (Num. 14:24, 38).  It is also noteworthy that Joshua was from the tribe of Ephraim, and Calev was of the tribe of Yehudah. This partnership has prophetic implications for our days and our task force.  They are described as having “a different spirit” from the rest, and have followed HaShem, fully, (Num. 14;24).  Today, the few pioneers called today to be instruments of HaShem's testimony, are also a minority from the two Houses, who are to be signs and wonders in the Work of HaShem in “the latter days.”

“Bind up the testimony, seal the instruction [Torah] among My disciples. And I will wait for the LORD, that hideth His face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for Him. Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me shall be for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwelleth in mount Zion.”        Isa. 8:16-28,JPS

At this time some early awakening souls ask, “I feel drawn to Yehudah and the Land, but what can I do now for Yehudah if I cannot settle in the Land now?” Others ask,  What can I do for this reunification?” For those who cannot go to live in the Land now, and or for those who want to help promote the reunification, the viable option now is to send ahead their support as tangible goodwill representatives and benefit not just the Land of the two Houses, but our brother, Yehudah, who was the first one to “go up” into the Land.  It is Yehudah who is prophetically described by Jacob as unmistakenly identified with winemaking in the Land:

Judah! thou -- thy brethren praise thee! Thy hand is on the neck of thine enemies, Sons of thy father bow themselves to thee. A lion's whelp is Judah, For prey, my son, thou hast gone up; He hath bent, he hath crouched as a lion, And as a lioness; who causeth him to arise?  The sceptre turneth not aside from Judah, And a lawgiver from between his feet, Till his Seed come; And his is the obedience of peoples. Binding to the vine his ass, And to the choice vine the colt of his ass, He hath washed in wine his clothing, And in the blood of grapes his covering.” Gen.49:9, JPS

Wine is a symbol of celebration, well-being and union.  We can be partakers of this “union” with Yehudah and the Land in an early and pioneering way, by planting vineyards and supporting our brothers and sisters of Yehudah who work those vineyards for the stated reasons in the prophecies of Jeremiah.

At the very present, we need to act swiftly to contribute our efforts to the planting and establishment of a vineyard dedicated to the very proposition to bring the two families of Israel together in a meaningful manner with great prophetic portent.  We need funds to purchase the vines and build the irrigation and fencing infrastructure for land already purchased by the faithful of Yehudah in Israel who are fired up with the concept of the return of Ephraim.  This is not a business venture for the sake of business.  It is a venture for the Joshuas and the Calevs of our day to begin to consciously realize a representative project of reunification.

To contribute materiel and support to this project of Ephraim does not require anything but an identification with the returning people of Yosef, and his companions, (Ezekiel 37:16).  We know from the prophecies of Isaiah, that when the descendants of the Ten Tribes shall return to their lost heritages, there will be those from among all Gentiles who are willing to join them in this endeavor.   We know, that those Gentiles who live among the Tribes of Israel, and take hold of the Covenant of Israel, are to be counted as  members of the the Tribes among whom they live, (Isa. 56:1-8).

For these and for all “latter day” returnees of the exiled Ten Tribes of Israel this vineyard project is a very tangible way to make a statement, that says:

“I am an Israelite, I wan to march under the banner of Ephraim, and I am making my forward presence known NOW in a way that counts.  Like Yehudah did in his pioneering settlement of the Land in early Zionist history, I am joining this 'work force' to work in the reclaiming effort of the Land.  By G-d's grace, I  am an early riser from the Valley of Dry Bones and am enlisting to prepare the Land for others to follow.  Soon I will be coming home to the hills of Shomron to drink a toast with my brothers and sisters to the graciousness of the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

Remember that those who are of Hebrew descent have a special role to play in the family of mankind.  A corresponding commitment is requried of them.  This is so much the more pertient to us who are awakened and called to service as the vanguard of the returning and gathering Ten Tribes of Israel.

Remember that Yosef is described by Jacob's prophesied blessing as  Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine by a fountain; its branches run over the wall.”  Gen. 49:22, JPS

You can be a fruitful vine when you join to make this project a living testimony to the “latter day” fulfillment of this prophecy in the Work of the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  Join the “work force” to find and add meaning to the reason you were called early to arise from the Valley of Dry Bones.

“Therefore, behold, I will allure her  and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly unto her.

And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope; and she shall respond there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.”  (Hos 2:16-17, JPS

“Behold, the days come, saith HaShem, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.

And I will turn the captivity of My people Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.  And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be plucked up out of their land which  I have given them, saith HaShem thy G-d.” Amos. 9:13-15, JPS

Like Joshua and Calev who were who were sent from the wilderness, we are also sent from the wilderness of isms, theologies, and ideologies of the world.  Yet, we have been awakened to the unfolding meaning of these prophecies for our days.  HaShem is speaking tenderly to us, and is waiting for our “response.”

“Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land in truth with My whole heart and with My whole soul.”   —Jer. 32:41

“And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be plucked up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.” — Amos 9:15

“Again shalt thou plant vineyards upon the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant, and shall have the use thereof.”   — Jer. 31:5

“And I will set Mine eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them back to this land; and I will build them, and not pull them down; and I will plant them, and not pluck them up.”  — Jer.24:6,

“If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up; for I repent Me of the evil that I have done unto you.”   — Jer. 42:10

“For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah the plant of His delight.”    — Isa. 5:7
